Srinagar, May 27 (JKNS):National Conference president and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said the security atmosphere in the Kashmir Valley has improved following the recent terror incident in Pahalgam and appealed to tourists to visit Kashmir without hesitation.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Pahalgam Golf Course, Farooq Abdullah as per news agency JKNS said the recent attack had shaken confidence but normalcy was being restored. “What happened here was unfortunate and should never have occurred. Tourists were arriving in large numbers, and rooms were fully booked. People were engaged in work without depending on government jobs,” he said.
He stated that despite the initial fear, the situation has gradually stabilized. “Thankfully, the fear is receding now. I just returned from Gulmarg where 400 to 500 tourists were present. Pahalgam is also witnessing movement again,” Abdullah said.
He credited the administration for taking necessary security measures after the attack and expressed hope that such steps would help revive confidence among visitors.
The NC leader urged the Ministry of External Affairs to pursue the removal of international travel advisories issued against Jammu and Kashmir. “I appeal to the Foreign Minister to engage with those countries which have imposed restrictions. There is peace now, and people abroad also wish to visit this land, especially those who enjoy golf,” he said.
Abdullah highlighted that golf has become a recognised sport under Khelo India and is also part of international events like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. “We must encourage our youth to take up this sport so that India can win medals in global competitions,” he added.
Admiring the scenic charm of the Valley, Abdullah remarked, “I’ve travelled across the world but haven’t seen such natural beauty. I urge people from all over the country to come here and strengthen the spirit of the nation. If we live in fear, we stop living.”
He also underscored the significance of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and expressed confidence that the pilgrimage would be peaceful and successful. “This yatra has been taking place for generations. I hope pilgrims come in large numbers, perform darshan of Bhole Nath, and spread the message of this land’s beauty,” he said.
Commenting on the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and interactions with tourism stakeholders, Farooq Abdullah said the move would reinforce a message of peace. “When the whole cabinet visits, it shows stability. It will also connect them with stakeholders ponywallahs, palkiwallahs, hoteliers, taxi drivers who’ve been worst affected. Many have taken loans for cabs, homes, or hotels. We must stand by them,” he added.
Responding to questions about alleged rifts within the NC, particularly involving Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Abdullah said such efforts to divide the party have always existed. “These tactics are nothing new. They tried it in my time, in my father’s time. We’re not concerned. We’re focused on resolving public issues. Insha Allah, you will see real change in the coming five years,” he said. (JKNS)
