New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that every citizen should focus on maintaining a good diet, staying well-hydrated, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly—while the Modi government will handle the rest when it comes to their healthcare.

Speaking at a programme organised by Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) on the occasion of World Liver Day here, Shah said that by maintaining proper hydration, a balanced diet, a regular exercise and adequate sleep according to body’s need, young people can achieve a lot in their lives, a Home Ministry statement said.

Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set before the country the goal of making India developed in 2047, coinciding with the centenary of independence, where India will be self-reliant in every field and will lead the world.

“The concept of a developed India cannot be realised by being unwell and that is why it is very important that every citizen remains healthy,” the Home Minister said.

Stating that the liver plays a very important role in keeping the body healthy, Shah said, “Among all the organs in our body, the liver has the greatest ability to regenerate and healthy liver is the gateway to a healthy body”.

He said that today on the occasion of ‘World Liver Day’, everyone should take a pledge to keep their ‘liver’ healthy with awareness, diligence and complete information. Sharing his experience of a healthy lifestyle, the Home Minister said that there has been a huge change in his life since May 2020.

Shah said, “Today the whole world is moving forward by accepting the mantra given in our Vedas ‘Aahaar Hi Aushdhi Hai’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past ten years has launched numerous initiatives aimed at promoting the health of the citizens through a holistic approach”.

He mentioned that the AYUSH Ministry is actively working on building a system focused on preventing illness. He noted that even major allopathic hospitals are now setting up AYUSH departments. He highlighted that the concept of World Yoga Day was designed to encompass both mental and physical well-being.

Besides, he stated that the Modi government is covering treatment costs of up to Rs five lakh for millions of people across the country, including full medical expenses for citizens over the age of 70.

The Home Minister said that the Modi government has spent Rs 65,000 crore to build the health infrastructure in the country and has made arrangements to make every Primary Health Center (PHC) and Community Health Center (CHC) a complete unit.

He said that for generic medicines, a network of more than 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Centers has been created in the country and through them medicines are available up to 80 percent cheaper. Under Mission Indradhanush, arrangements have been made for free vaccination of children from birth to the age of 15 years and 1 crore 32 lakh mothers were also vaccinated.

Shah said that through the e-Sanjeevani app, over 30.9 crore digital medical consultations have been successfully provided by major healthcare institutions to rural areas across the country.

He further noted that the country’s health budget, which was Rs 37,000 crore in 2014, has now been increased to Rs 1.27 lakh crore under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.

Shah urged the corporate sector to prioritize liver health in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts and support organisations dedicated to promoting liver wellness.

He also called on the media to balance entertainment with spreading health awareness. Additionally, he suggested that ILBS should collaborate with AIIMS and other major government hospitals nationwide to provide guidance for liver patients and raise public awareness on the issue.
