jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday witnessed heated protests over the killings of civilians in Billawar, Kathua, and the controversial fashion show in Gulmarg that sparked outrage.
As per news agency JKNS, NC and Congress MLAs stood up, demanding a discussion on the Billawar civilian killings. Amid the uproar, MLA Bani Dr. Rameshwar Singh, who was assaulted on Saturday night in Billawar, attempted to storm into the Well of the House but was restrained by Marshals. The Speaker urged NC legislators to maintain decorum, but they continued their protests.
Meanwhile, MLA Kupwara Mir Muhammad Fayaz demanded strict action against the organizers of the fashion show in Gulmarg, calling it an insult to Kashmir’s cultural values.
As disruptions continued, the Speaker ruled out any discussion on the Billawar killings, citing Section 32 of the J&K Reorganisation Act-2019, which places police and public order outside the Assembly’s jurisdiction. He informed the House that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has already ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Regarding the Gulmarg fashion show, the Speaker stated that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already ordered an investigation, and as per Assembly rules, matters under inquiry cannot be debated in the House.
The Speaker, however, condemned the assault on MLA Bani Dr. Rameshwar Singh and called for a thorough probe into the incident. (JKNS)
