Kupwara: Amid heavy snowfall and ongoing disruptions, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan (IAS), addressed the media regarding the district’s response to road blockages and power restoration. She confirmed that major roads, including those leading to Karnah, Keran, and Machil, remain blocked due to heavy snow and avalanche warnings. However, inner roads have been cleared, and emergency services remain operational in Kupwara town.

To assess power restoration efforts, the DC visited various receiving stations, including Hirri-Trehgam, Kralpora, and Vilgam, where she took stock of feeder-wise supply restoration. She directed field staff to ensure an uninterrupted power supply as per the curtailment schedule, emphasizing the importance of electricity amid severe weather conditions.

Regarding snow clearance, she stated that Priority-I roads have already been cleared, while efforts are underway to open link roads for smoother movement, particularly for medical emergencies. Addressing concerns over border roads, the DC advised commuters to avoid travel due to the high avalanche risk*but assured that clearance operations are in full swing and roads will be reopened soon as conditions improve.

To assist stranded passengers, the administration has arranged helicopter services for emergency evacuations and has activated shelter homes in snowbound areas. Residents and travelers have urged the administration to expedite road clearance and ensure stable power supply, especially with Ramadan just two days away
