Cold Wave grips Kashmir Parts, Srinagar shivers at -5.5°C; MET Predicts Light Rain and Snow from Jan 29

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir region continues to witness freezing temperatures as the mercury dips further across the Valley, Jammu region, and Ladakh, while Srinagar shivered at minus 5.5°C.

Srinagar recorded -5.5°C, while Qazigund and Kupwara stood at -4.0°C and -4.3°C, respectively. Pahalgam reported -6.4°C, Gulmarg -5.2°C, and Sonamarg -6.6°C, with Zojila being the coldest in Kashmir at -24.0°C.

In Jammu, Banihal recorded 1.5°C, Katra 8.2°C, Rajouri 4.4°C, and Jammu city 5.8°C. Ladakh witnessed an extreme chill, with Leh at -11.7°C, Kargil at -14.3°C, and Drass at -22.5°C.

The Director of the Meteorological Department told JKNS that dry weather is likely to prevail until the afternoon of January 29. However, light rain or snow is expected at scattered places on the night of January 29 and the morning of January 30, with isolated snowfall predicted for January 31. The period from February 1 to February 5 may see cloudy weather with intermittent light rain or snow.

The MET Department also predicted a rise in minimum temperatures by 2–4°C from January 29 onwards. Tourists and transporters are advised to follow official advisories for safety. (JKNS)
