Child succumbs to injuries after four days; case highlights urgent need for mental health awareness in Kashmir
Srinagar: A shocking incident happened in Srinagar when a five-year-old girl succumbed to injuries after being thrown off the Rajbagh bridge by her aunt, who police claim was suffering from severe mental health issues.
The incident, as per the details collected by the news agency (JKNS), reveals the devastating and shocking impact of untreated psychological disorders and the urgent need for mental health awareness in the region.
An official said the girl was rushed to a hospital after falling onto the concrete base below the bridge. “She fought for her life for three days at Srinagar’s Super Specialty Hospital but succumbed to her injuries on Friday,” he said.
The official further added that the accused, Samaira Mushtaq (32), has been arrested. According to the police, she had been on anti-depressant medication and was experiencing panic attacks.
Meanwhile, the officials at Police Station Kothi Bagh confirmed that the First Information Report (FIR), initially filed under attempted murder, has been updated to include murder charges following the child’s death.—(JKNS)
