Principal Secretary Culture inaugurates Exhibition showcasing 50 artworks at IMFA

JAMMU: Principal Secretary, Culture and School Education, Suresh Kumar Gupta, today inaugurated an exhibition showcasing 50 artworks created during a 10-day printmaking workshop.

The workshop, focused on traditional graphic techniques such as relief printing, intaglio printing and lithography, was jointly organized by the Kala Kendra Society, Jammu, and the Department of Painting, Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), University of Jammu.

In his address to the guests, students and faculty of IMFA, Suresh Kumar Gupta praised the displayed works, highlighting the talent and dedication of the participating artists. He announced plans to introduce awards for youth icons aged 18 to 30, aimed at nurturing the inherent talent of the younger generation.

While inspecting various departments of IMFA, the Principal Secretary commended the institution for its world class work and reiterated the government’s commitment towards promoting, supporting and facilitating sale of artworks in the national market.

Secretary of the Kala Kendra Society, Dr. Javaid Rahi, in his welcome address, stated that the primary objective of the workshop and exhibition was to equip young artists with vital skills in graphic arts. The training included hands-on experience with litho and etching presses, letterpress tools and other essential printmaking equipment.

In his address, Professor Shohab Anayat Malik emphasized the significance of the workshop in bridging traditional and digital printing techniques, thereby offering participants a unique creative platform.

Milan Sharma, Head of the Painting Department, reflected on the workshop’s success, describing it as immensely beneficial for students and faculty alike. Rakesh Sharma, Head of Fine Arts, also underscored the importance of conducting such events to enhance artistic practices.

Workshop expert Dr. Dushyant Sureshbai Patel shared his experiences in printmaking, providing valuable insights into the techniques explored during the workshop.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Richita Dutta, faculty member and workshop coordinator, who highlighted the role of collaborative effort in nurturing the skills of both students and faculty. Ankush Kesar, a faculty member of IMFA noted that this was the first workshop of its kind held at IMFA.

Dr. Priya Datta,  Head Music Department , Raj Kumar Bharopia , eminent artist Bhushan Kesar also took part in the event.
