Calls for strict action against encroachments on water bodies, adherence to dredging guidelines

SRINAGAR JULY 6:- Deputy Commissioner(DC) Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat on Saturday, held a meeting with the Officers of Irrigation & Flood Control Department to review and expedite ongoing and approved irrigation projects.

The DC also took stock of the measures undertaken to address the encroachments along the water bodies and irrigation canals.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of timely completion of irrigation projects to ensure efficient water management and support agricultural activities in the District.

He stressed the need for strict action against encroachments to safeguard water bodies and irrigation channels. He added that an effective irrigation management is crucial for the agricultural prosperity of the district, and all projects must be completed on time without any encroachments hindering the flow of water.

DC Srinagar urged the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to work closely with the Revenue Department to conduct a fresh assessment within the stipulated time. He also highlighted the necessity of adhering to the CPWRS guidelines regarding dredging activities.

The DC instructed the departments to maintain transparency in their operations and ensure that all utilization certificates are up to date and submitted as required by the authorities.

Earlier, during the meeting, the DC was informed about the encroachments removed , including 518 Kucha Pucca structures, 103 boundary walls, and 5,180 trees in different parts of the District.

Regarding dredging, the DC was informed that dredging of the entire Jhelum River was completed under FMP Phase I, and no further dredging is permissible under CPWRS guidelines. The utilization certificate for Rs 413 crore has been submitted and will be resubmitted if required by the Honorable Court, the chair informed.

A fresh assessment is to be carried out by the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department in coordination with the Revenue Department within 10 to 15 days, the chair was informed.

The meeting was attended by Chief Planning Officer Srinagar, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, Officers of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Concerned Tehsildars and other Officers.
