KARNAH : Karna has been gripped by heavy snowfall persisting for three consecutive days, leading to significant disruptions in the region’s daily routines. The Meteorological Department’s forecasts accurately predicted the continuation of intense precipitation in Karnah, a subdivision of the Kupwara district. Reports indicate that areas such as Tangdhar and Nechiyan within Karnah have experienced substantial snow accumulation, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents. The combination of heavy snowfall and rainfall has resulted in power outages and the closure of major roads, including Jada, severely hindering transportation and communication networks. These adverse weather conditions have made it difficult for authorities to clear the roads promptly, especially in higher-altitude regions where snow removal efforts are particularly challenging. The closure of the Karna-Kupwara highway, caused by a staggering five feet of snow accumulation, has left a considerable number of passengers stranded, unable to proceed with their journeys until weather conditions improve and road access is restored. The situation has prompted authorities to reassure the stranded individuals that efforts are underway to reopen the highway as soon as weather conditions permit. In response to the ongoing snowfall, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Karnah has affirmed that main roads have been cleared of snow, with plans to initiate snow removal operations on internal roads later in the day. Despite facing logistical hurdles, authorities are actively working to repair damaged power transmission lines, aiming to restore electricity supply to affected areas promptly.Furthermore, measures are being taken to ensure the availability of essential commodities in the region, alleviating concerns about potential shortages during this period of inclement weather. The SDM has emphasized the importance of maintaining active teams throughout the subdivision to address any emerging challenges and ensure the well-being of residents amidst the snowfall.
