The Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament commenced on August 22, 2023, with great fanfare at the Polo View Hockey Stadium.
Organized by HQ 31 Sub Area of Chinar Corps in collaboration with J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K, the tournament aims to honor the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand, the iconic field hockey player, on his birth anniversary.
Widely hailed as the ‘Wizard,’ Dhyan Chand’s remarkable achievements include three Olympic Gold Medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936.
His birth anniversary on August 29th is celebrated as National Sports Day each year.
The tournament has attracted ten teams representing the ten districts of the Kashmir Valley.
The matches are being conducted on a knockout cum league basis, promising an exciting and competitive series of games.
The inaugural match saw Bandipora and Ganderbal clash on the field, resulting in a thrilling 3-1 victory for Ganderbal. Raja Abbas of the Ganderbal team showcased an exceptional performance, earning him the title of Man of the Match along with a coveted medal and cash prize.
The opening ceremony of the tournament was graced by the presence of Maj Gen PBS Lamba, VSM, General Officer Commanding of HQ 31 Sub Area, who took on the role of Chief Guest.
The event also welcomed several distinguished guests from civil administration, the J&K Sports Council, and Hockey J&K, all of whom joined in the celebration of this significant sporting event.
