AGS Dawar is located just beneath the Habba Khatoon peak in the Gurez Valley. The school was established in 2004 and was inaugurated by Lt Gen & Mrs Hari Prasad. The school started its functioning as a Primary school with just 38 students. In 2008 as the number of students started increasing, the school was upgraded to middle level. With the hard work and great efforts of faculty members the school was upgraded to Secondary School in 2018. The present strength of students is 207 from LKG to 10th standard with 14 teachers. Being the only private school in Gurez valley AGS Dawar plays an important role in providing quality education to the rural children of the valley. The school is well equipped with all the contemporary gadgets required for modern education.
The school does not solely focus on academic performance; it also lays emphasis on all round development of the students. Along with the academics, extracurricular activities are also organized at the school. The hardworking staff gives their time to each child to grow at their own pace. The school has all the facilities of library, computer Lab, science lab, playground and audio-visual room. The school also offers variety of co-curricular activities such as sports, NCC, singing, drawing, dancing. Moreover, the students of AGS, Dawar get exposure to interact with students of other AGS at Kupwara, Budgam, Navgaon, Baraub and nearby Govt as well as private school by participating in various competitions, seminars and Camps. The school has a thriving alumni association, who conduct motivational talks and career awareness classes for the students. AGS Dawar is a symbol of quality education, providing knowledge and moral values to the otherwise under privileged students of the valley, the quality infrastructure, diverse co-curriculum and focused educational mechanism, has been the bench mark of this institution.
Over the years the academic results of AGS Dawar have shown a steady growth. The whole-hearted efforts put in by the dedicated staff members of the school and great support from Indian Army has yielded positive results. The systematic approach adapted towards over all development of students has ensured that the school children have carved a niche for themselves in the society. With the help of Indian Army, the institution has incorporated innovative changes in the existing learning and teaching methodology. During winters as the valley remains cut off from the Dist Headquarter it becomes a challenging task for the Army to run the school. However, the faculty inspired by the enthusiasm of the students takes initiative to ensure maximum attendance and imparting of education even during the harsh winter conditions.
For financial sustainability presently, the school is funded by Indrani Balan Foundation (IBF), a welfare foundation that is active in a variety of philanthropic work across India and is doing a yeoman service to the children of this backward region. The foundation has undertaken this initiative under Corporate Social Responsibility scheme with the support of the central government. The local population in the region have reposed faith on the Indian Army by entrusting AGS Dawar with education of their wards and have appreciated the efforts of the faculty in various forums.
