Major Walia the “Rambo” of the Indian Army was commissioned in the 4th Battalion of the Jat Regiment. He was a member of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) and was sent to Sri Lanka on a peace mission. The Parachute Regiment (SF) noticed all qualities of a Para commando in him and he was seconded to 9 Para SF. In 1997, he was sent to the United States for a specialized course and got the first position. He also gets a very rare feat to speak at the Pentagon during this mission. Fondly and out of respect for his competence, he was called “Colonel” during that course!
Later deputed as an Aide-de-camp (ADC) to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Ved Prakash Malik. When the Kargil War broke out, he obtained special permission from the COAS to go to the battlefield. Within ten days of his departure from Delhi, he led his team to capture Zulu Top at 5200 meters, in the Mushkoh Valley sector. When asked about his attack on Zulu Top without acclimatization, Maj Sudhir said “Sir you know that I’m a Pahari (from the mountains). I don’t need acclimatization.”
Reportedly, On 29th Aug 1999, Major Sudhir Kumar Walia with a squad of five commandos was on a “Search and Destroy” mission in the dense jungle of “Hafruda Forest” (Handwara) in Kupwara district of J&K. The squad suddenly chanced upon a well-camouflaged hideout having twenty odd terrorists. Leading from the front and showing extreme courage, he killed 9 terrorists, however, he sustained gunshot wounds and was unable to move but he continued to give orders to the troops until the last terrorist was eliminated. He allowed only evacuating himself after the operation ended but later succumbed to injuries. Major Walia was an epitome of Bravery and Courage and in true meaning; he was a “Scholar Warrior”
History witnessed that during every unrest or mass violence pumped by the Pakistani agents in Kashmir, the lost resort was the army for maintaining peace and order. Army during tough times not only maintains peace but also saved and provides safety and security to the people during crises and natural eventualities. There is a huge difference between a civil job and an army job; in civil you enjoy life at the behest of our soldiers. `
Honestly, their service is selfless, going to any place in the world without their near and dear ones made them strong and brave. Waking nights and remaining cautious make our life full of joy and peace. Indian army has a tremendous role in UN peacekeeping movements. Its records that India has sacrificed the highest numbers of soldiers in UN-Peacekeeping missions in different countries. They are going there for us. They are protecting those whom they even don’t know. They are making supreme sacrifices not for themselves nor their family alone but for the whole country. The way they fight motivates me. The way they face every problem makes me strong. If we are peaceful over here, that’s because of them. I feel comfortable over here because of the unknown brothers over there. They don’t complain. They don’t say their pain. They don’t show their pain when they miss their family. All they want is to protect us! Yes, that’s true! They gave them today for our tomorrow.
