SRINAGAR: The State Council of Educational Research and Training Kashmir (SCERT), Monday, hosted the largest celebration of National Sports Day, which was commemorated in all the districts and schools in both the provinces of Jammu and Kashmir.

The event, attended by the all the faculty members of SCERT, emphasised the value of sports and their practicality, describing them as a significant source of employment in the modern world.

Sohail Farooq, Cultural Coordinator, SCERT, while welcoming the visitors, described the aims and objectives of holding such events.

Javed Kirmani, In Charge, Cultural Wing, SCERT, spoke on the history of National Sports Day.

“Every year on August 29, National Sports Day is observed to celebrate the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand, who helped India capture the first-ever hat-trick of Olympic gold medals at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 summer games,” Kirmani informed.

The purpose of National Sports Day, he said, is to celebrate Major Dhyanchand’s legacy and to spread awareness of the value and advantages of including sports and physical activity in daily life.

Syed Humayun Qaiser, a well-known former Ranji player and former Director of All India Radio, gave the keynote presentation during the event.

He claimed that sports have evolved into a sizable industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people and serves as more than just a means of entertainment.

Sports, Humayun said, are no longer merely seen as a kind of amusement, as they once were.

“A person becomes a responsible citizen through sports,” he continued. “In it, discipline creates the elements of encouragement to help a person overcome the most challenging circumstances at different phases of life.”

He cited multiple examples of well-known sports personalities who have made outstanding ‘philanthropic’ work, as evidence that ‘sports encourage us to work together and have empathy for the suffering of others’.

In order to spread the FIT India movement to schools, colleges, ministries, government agencies, and private organisations this year, the “Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports” (MYAS) and the “Fit India Mission” are urging them to get heavily involved.

On this day, schools, colleges, ministries, government agencies, and private organisations should encourage their students, staff, and employees to engage in sports and fitness activities for at least an hour.
