Srinagar, 20 Jun 2021. The ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh Victory Mashaal’, symbol of India’s
1971 War Victory over Pakistan reached JAK LI Regimental Centre and it was given a
grand reception by Deputy Commandant, JAK LI Regimental Centre to commemorate
50 Year of India’s Victory over Pakistan.
The event started with a ‘Guard of Honour’ to the Victory Flame, followed by
Victory Flame march around the entire Regimental Centre by War Veterans in an open
vehicle along with tunes played by the Military Band.
Commandant JAK LI Regimental Centre, highlighted the role of JAK LI Regiment
in the 1971 War. The JAK LI Battalions played an important role in the victory of Indian
Army over Pakistan Army leading to the creation of Bangladesh. These Battalions of the
erstwhile J&K Militia Regiment were honoured with three Battle Honours for their
exceptional bravery. 8 J&K Militia was awarded with “Battle Honour Laleali and Picket
707”, 9 J&K Militia was awarded with “Battle Honour Shingo River Valley” and 11 J&K
Militia was awarded with “Battle Honour Gutrian”. In the war, Soldiers and Officers of
J&K Militia Regiment were awarded 07 Vir Chakra, 10 Sena Medal, 02 Vishisht Seva
Medal, 09 Mention-In-Despatches making it a total of 28 Gallantry Awards during the
1971 war.
In recognition of great valour and supreme sacrifices during the 1971 war, J&K
Militia was amalgamated into regular Indian Army in the Year 1972 and in year 1976
was rechristened as JAK LI Regiment.
On the occasion of Victory Mashaal reaching JAK LI Centre, the Commandant
felicitated the ESMs and Veer Naris. The veer naris included Mst Khatija Begum w/o
Late Nk Mohammad Dar, KC of Pioneer Corps, Mst Sarna Begum, w/o Late L/Nk
Ghulam Hussan Mir of 1 J&K Militia, Mst Jameela Begum w/o Late Hav Abdul Gaffar
Mir of 1 J&K Militia, Mst Noor Bibi w/o Late NC Salam Paray of Indian Air Force and
1971 War Veterans Ex Hony Capt Asadullah Reshi of 12 J&K Militia, Ex Nk Mohd
Munawar Sheikh of 12 J&K Militia, Ex Nk Ali Akbar Khan of 12 J&K Militia, Ex Rfn
Mohd Yousuf Bhatt of 13 J&K Militia, Ex Rfn Abdul Gaffar Lone of 12 J&K Militia and Ex
Rfn Mohd Yousuf Khan of 3 J&K Militia, who were part of 1971 War. These brave men
played a vital role for the victory over Pakistan Army leading to the biggest surrender of
soldiers after the World War.
On this occasion, Commandant exhorted the present generation of soldiers to
emulate the highest standards of professional excellence set by these veterans. He also
conveyed the nations gratitude and respect to the veterans and the veer naris.
