Laid emphasizes on collaborative measures to combat tobacco use in Srinagar
SRINAGAR AUGUST 06:- In order to review the implementation and enforcement of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COPTA) in the District, a Workshop cum Meeting of District Level Coordination Committee(DLCC) was held under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner(DC) Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat here today at Meeting Hall of DC Office Complex.
The meeting focused on discussing the implementation of the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) in Srinagar.
Chief Planning Officer, Fayaz Ahmad, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tahir Sajad and all concerned were present in the meeting.
On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to combating tobacco use in the region.
During the meeting, DC said that tobacco use is a major public health concern that requires coordinated efforts from all sectors of society.
DC further emphasized that we must ensure that our educational institutions are free from tobacco influence, and this begins with the implementation of the Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFFEI) initiative.”
He also highlighted the importance of vendor regulation, noting that unlicensed vendors contribute significantly to the accessibility of tobacco products, especially among youth.
A robust strategy for vendor licensing is crucial. We need to involve all stakeholders, including law enforcement, health officials, and the community, to ensure compliance and reduce the availability of tobacco products, DC told the Officers.
Dr. Bilal directed the Chief Planning Officer to devise an effective strategy for vendor licensing of tobacco products in Srinagar, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts. He also stressed the need for regular enforcement drives and continuous awareness campaigns at all levels to educate the public about the dangers of tobacco use.
The Chief Medical Officer, Srinagar, welcomed the participants and provided an overview of the District-level achievements of NTCP in Srinagar. Dr. Mir Mushtaq, Nodal Officer, NTCP, Kashmir, highlighted the challenges encountered in the program’s implementation within the district.
A training workshop was conducted by the Tobacco Control Cell, Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, with participation from stakeholders across various departments and civil society members. The workshop featured detailed presentations on the implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003.
This program aimed to fortify the NTCP’s implementation in Srinagar, striving to mitigate the harmful effects of tobacco on society. The collaborative efforts of the officials and stakeholders are expected to significantly enhance public health outcomes in the region.
