This was evidently visible in the previous year, when Kupwara witnessed floods during July due to excessive rainfall on one hand, whereas there was no snowfall during the Chill-i-Kalan period, which forecasted a ‘snowless winter’. This is also evident in the delayed a much lower snowfall in 2023-24. Rapid urbanisation exerts pressure on existing water supply systems, exacerbating the challenge of water scarcity. Meanwhile, unsustainable land practices threaten to diminish the region’s natural water retention capacities compounding the issue further.
