Police seizes illicit timber in Ganderbal; vehicle seized, driver arrested

Ganderbal, May 14: Police in Ganderbal seized illicit timber in Kangan area besides seized vehicle and arrested the driver.

Acting on specific input about timber smuggling, a police party of Police Station Kangan headed by SHO Kangan Inspector Mehboob Banday established a checkpoint at Gujjar Pati Prang. During checking, a Santro car bearing registration No. DL3CAT-1731 driven by Tariq Ahmad Bhat son of Gh Hassan Bhat resident of Najwan Kangan loaded with illicit Timber (Kairu) was intercepted.

During preliminary questioning, officers learnt that the timber loaded in the vehicle is illegally acquired from the nearby forest. The accused driver has been arrested and the vehicle alongwith illicit timber (Kairu) has been seized. Investigation into the matter is underway to track down all the accused persons involved in the commission of the crime.

Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 38/2024, under relevant sections of law stands registered at Police Station Kangan & further investigation is in progress.

The drive against timber smugglers will continue to ensure protection of green gold. The consistent actions of Police against anti-social elements should reassure the community members to keep our society free from crime. J&K Police have resolved to act as per law against those smugglers who indulge in such activities in future also.
