JAMMU, MARCH 01: Government Degree College Marh organised a two day awareness programme about the ill effects drug abuse on the individual health and society as whole.

The awareness campaign was organized in collaboration with JK Police Headquarter, Jammu and SPVLG Foundation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Koul, Principal of the College.

The programme was conducted by NSS Programme Officer Prof Sachin Kumar Bhagat. The chief guest for the 1st day programme was Rajinder Kumar Katoch, SSP Staff officer, DIG office Jammu.

The guest for honour for the day was Brijesh Sharma, SP Rural. The other police officials present were Dy. SP Jatinder Singh, from DIG office Jammu and SDPO Domana Jenab Mudasir.

During the inaugural ceremony, the keynote address was presented by principal of the college Dr. Rakesh Kumar Koul who emphasised on the importance of spreading awareness and role of youth in reducing drug addiction in the society. It was followed by a group discussion on three themes: Drug Abuse and Crime Co-Relation, Drug abuse and its ill impact on body and family and remedies and suggestions on controlling drug usage in the society.

Ten participants presented their views on the themes in the three rounds.

The guests also made the students aware about usage of illegal drugs which cause severe damage to the future of the nation and importance of reducing drug demand from the society. They also spoke on the causes, remedies and laws related to the same. The prize winners for the first day group discussion were Gourav Kumar from 2nd semester who was awarded with Rs. 2500, 2nd prize winner was Vivek Sharma from 6th semester who was awarded with Rs. 1500 and the 3rd prize winner was Prerna from 4th semester who was awarded with Rs. 1000.

The Jury members were Prof Anita Kumari(HOD English), Dr. Sheetal Devi (HOD Dogri) and Tanu Sharma (HOD Hindi).

On the second day, the special Guest was Meenakshi Sumbria, Drug de-addiction counsellor from SPVLG foundation affiliated with the health department J&K. The main objective of her awareness programme was ways to discuss ways and means to reduce drug demand, problems of drug addiction ,preventive action, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, dissemination of information and public awareness under the Umbrella of “NIJAATH” a programme specially designed on prevention and treatment on tobacco and drug addiction.

The 2 days event was conducted by Dr. Ashu Jolly (HOD Education), Dr. Ram Dayal (HOD Mathematics) and Dr. Balwinder Saini (HOD Chemistry). At the Valedictory function, the vote of thanks was presented by Prof Asha Kumari (HOD Geography).

A total of 35 students along with student Presidium attended and participated in the event. The Technical Support was provided by Mohit Kalotra.
