The Indian Army took a significant step towards environmental sustainability today. In an event graced by Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, the Army unveiled six electric buses. This initiative is part of its broader commitment to eco-friendly practices. By introducing these buses, the Indian Army aims to reduce its carbon footprint and promote the preservation of the environment.
This commendable initiative is a continuation of the Indian Army’s dedicated efforts to support the country’s green initiatives. Following the procurement of 18 Electric Cars last year, which are currently being effectively utilized, the induction of electric buses showcases the Army’s resolve to champion sustainable mobility solutions.
The Indian Army’s environmental stewardship extends beyond the adoption of electric vehicles. A series of impactful initiatives have been undertaken to contribute towards the preservation of the environment. These include the implementation of solid waste management plans across various stations, the installation of solar power plants in stations and remote field areas, land fill measures, and smart metering plans aimed at conserving energy.
Further demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Indian Army has actively supported the Government of India’s initiatives, notably Mission Amrit Sarovar, by rejuvenating 450 ponds nationwide, with 292 already geo-tagged. The focus on solar energy initiatives and zero waste to landfill are also pivotal aspects of the Army’s green strategy.
Looking ahead, the Indian Army is procuring more than 110 Electric Vehicles (EVs) with an investment of about Rs 175 Crore. Although currently inducted only in Delhi, there are plans to expand the fleet of EVs across other regions in the next 2-3 years. Another 60 Electric Buses, 415 Electric Cars, and 423 Electric Motor Cycles are under various stages of Procurement and are likely to be inducted by Dec 2025.
This expansion is anticipated to facilitate a significant reduction in logistics loads by minimizing fuel requirements and promoting environmental sustainability.
The Indian Army has identified 29 stations and 145 units where the support system for the operation of electric vehicles exists or is envisaged to be developed, signifying a future where electric vehicles will be predominantly used in peace stations, thereby ensuring a greener and more sustainable operational environment.
The Indian Army’s steadfast commitment to embracing green initiatives not only underscores its role in safeguarding the nation but also its dedication to preserving the environment for future generations. This initiative is a testament to the Indian Army’s vision of integrating sustainability with defence operations, setting a precedent for eco-conscious practices across the nation.
