“As the winter season unfolds in Kashmir, it brings with it the annual migration of water birds from foreign lands, transforming the serene lakes and water shelters into a lively spectacle. These migratory birds, hailing from Asia and Europe, find refuge in the valley for up to five months, creating habitats in renowned locations such as Lake Vallar, Sar, Mansbal, and more.
The allure of this natural phenomenon is heightened by the presence of approximately 100,000 birds congregating around these water bodies, and there is anticipation of an even larger number this year. Jammu witnesses its share of this avian migration, with birds camping at Mansar Lake, Ranjit Sagar Dam, and Gowal Jails.
In Kashmir, the scenic beauty is enhanced as these visitors find solace in Lake Vallar, Lake Dal, Nagin, Sir Mansbal, Shalbak, Panpur, and other water bodies. The Department of Wildlife Kashmir underscores the significance of these migratory birds, not only for their aesthetic contribution but also for their role in maintaining the delicate ecological balance.
Miss Afshah, the Wetland Warden, expressed optimism about a higher number of migratory birds this year. Emphasizing the collective responsibility, she stated that the protection of these birds rests on the shoulders of relevant institutions and the local residents, urging them to play a crucial role in preserving the natural beauty and ecological harmony of the region.”
