Karnah Kupwara: National Girl Child Day is celebrated in the country on 25 January every year with an objective to provide support and opportunities to the girls of our country. It aims towards promoting awareness about the rights of the girl child and to increase awareness on the importance of girl education, their health and nutrition and also to promote their position in the society to make their living better. Gender discrimination is a major problem that girls or women face throughout their life. The First National Girl Child Day was celebrated on 25 January 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

This year the National Girl Child Day was also celebrated at Tithwal on the Line of Control under the aegis of Shakti Vijay Brigade to create awareness about the rights; a girl owns and to give them more opportunities like everyone else is getting. Basically, to value them and to respect them like everybody else and give a new perspective towards girl child thereby decreasing discrimination. The main focus is on changing society’s attitude towards them, decrease female foeticide and create awareness about the decreasing sex ratio. During the event various outdoor sports activities were undertaken including 100Mtr and 200Mtr Race, Sac Race, Lemon-Spoon Race and Kho-Kho. In addition to these sports activities, “Mary Kom” movie was also screened in TCDC auditorium.

The celebrations were whole heartedly attended by approx 88 girls of the region. After the culmination of the event, gifts were presented to the all participants and a light refreshment was also catered for the complete gathering. Such events leave a positive strike on the locals thereby ensuring a change in perspective as well as in perception. Not to forget the boost in confidence it gives to our future warriors.
