Karnah, Nov 6 (JKNS): In a significant initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and encouraging farmers to adopt chemical-free farming practices, the Department of Agriculture, Zone Tangdar, organised an Organic Fair Mela under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) at Kandi Payeen village in Sub-Division Tangdar on Friday.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from local farmers, organic growers and other stakeholders, providing them with an important platform to showcase organically cultivated agricultural produce and learn about the growing importance of organic farming in the agricultural sector.
During the fair, farmers displayed a variety of organically grown agricultural products, highlighting the potential of the region’s agricultural resources and the benefits of traditional and environmentally friendly farming methods. The exhibition also provided an opportunity for farmers to share their experiences, exchange ideas and learn from one another about adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
Officials and agricultural representatives sensitised farmers about the importance of organic farming in maintaining soil fertility, protecting the environment, conserving biodiversity and reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. They highlighted that the adoption of organic farming practices can contribute significantly towards producing healthier agricultural commodities while ensuring long-term sustainability of farming activities.
Special emphasis was also laid on the importance of organic certification, maintaining proper records and documentation, value addition, product branding and effective marketing strategies. Farmers were informed that improving the quality, packaging and marketability of organic produce could help them secure better returns and strengthen their economic condition.
The Organic Fair Mela also served as an interactive platform between agricultural extension functionaries and farming communities, enabling farmers to discuss their concerns, understand available departmental support and gain practical knowledge about the opportunities associated with organic agriculture.
The initiative assumes particular significance for the rural and farming communities of Tangdar, where agriculture remains an important source of livelihood for a considerable section of the population. Promoting organic farming can help preserve traditional agricultural practices while opening new opportunities for sustainable production and improved income generation.
The Department of Agriculture reiterated its commitment to strengthening sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices across Sub-Division Tangdar through the effective implementation of PKVY and other departmental schemes.
The programme concluded with an appeal to farmers to increasingly adopt organic farming methods, make optimum use of available departmental schemes and actively participate in initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, protecting natural resources and strengthening the livelihoods of farming communities.
The event marked another step towards creating greater awareness about organic agriculture and encouraging farmers to explore sustainable farming methods for a healthier environment and a prosperous agricultural future.
