Jammu and Kashmir has achieved another significant milestone in promoting its tourism potential by receiving the Best Tourist Destination Award at the India Travel Mart (ITM) Goa 2026. The recognition highlights the growing popularity of the Union Territory as one of India’s most attractive tourism destinations and reflects the sustained efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department to showcase its natural beauty, cultural richness, historical heritage and diverse travel experiences at national and international platforms. The award is a moment of pride for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and provides fresh momentum to the region’s efforts to strengthen its position on India’s tourism map.

The award was accepted on behalf of the Tourism Department by Deputy Directors Rashid Raina and Pankaj Sasan during the event. Their participation represented Jammu and Kashmir’s continued commitment to engaging with tourism stakeholders, travel operators, hospitality professionals and other industry representatives. The recognition at India Travel Mart Goa is particularly important as it provides national-level visibility to the tourism opportunities available across the Union Territory and strengthens confidence among travel professionals seeking new and attractive destinations for their clients.

The Jammu and Kashmir pavilion emerged as one of the prominent attractions at the travel mart, drawing considerable interest from travel professionals, tour operators and visitors. The pavilion presented the diverse tourism offerings of the region, highlighting its picturesque landscapes, snow-covered mountains, lush green meadows, pristine lakes, traditional handicrafts, rich cultural heritage and adventure tourism opportunities. Through promotional material and interactions with industry representatives, the pavilion provided an opportunity to communicate the unique experiences that Jammu and Kashmir offers to domestic and international travellers. It also helped establish connections with tourism stakeholders who can play an important role in expanding travel opportunities and attracting more visitors to the region.

Jammu and Kashmir possesses an extraordinary range of tourism attractions that distinguish it from other destinations in the country. From the world-famous Dal Lake and Mughal Gardens of Srinagar to the breathtaking meadows of Gulmarg, the scenic beauty of Pahalgam and the spiritual significance of the Amarnath cave shrine, the Valley offers experiences for visitors with different interests. Similarly, the Jammu region attracts pilgrims and tourists through destinations such as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Patnitop, Shiv Khori and numerous historical and religious sites. The combination of natural beauty, spirituality, adventure and heritage makes Jammu and Kashmir a destination with enormous potential throughout the year.

Adventure tourism is another important segment that can further strengthen the region’s tourism economy. Gulmarg is internationally recognised for skiing and winter sports, while Pahalgam, Sonamarg and other mountainous areas offer opportunities for trekking, camping, mountaineering and nature-based activities. The lakes, rivers and mountain landscapes provide scope for recreational tourism, photography and outdoor exploration. Such activities not only attract adventure enthusiasts but also create opportunities for local guides, transport operators, hotel owners, handicraft producers and small business entrepreneurs. Promoting these experiences through national tourism platforms can help bring new visitors and encourage longer stays.

The recognition at India Travel Mart Goa also reinforces the importance of developing Jammu and Kashmir as a year-round tourism destination rather than limiting its appeal to particular seasons. While summer attracts visitors seeking pleasant weather, gardens and green landscapes, winter offers a completely different experience through snowfall, skiing and winter festivals. Spring brings the beauty of blooming gardens and almond blossoms, while autumn transforms the Valley into a picturesque landscape of golden Chinar leaves. By promoting seasonal tourism products, the Tourism Department can encourage visitors to explore the region throughout the year and create more consistent economic opportunities for people associated with the tourism sector.

Tourism also plays a significant role in generating employment and supporting the livelihoods of local communities. Hotels, restaurants, houseboats, transport services, handicraft businesses, pony operators, tour guides and adventure sports providers are closely connected with the industry’s growth. An increase in tourist arrivals directly benefits thousands of families, particularly those living in areas where tourism is a major source of income. Greater national recognition can therefore help expand economic opportunities, encourage entrepreneurship among young people and promote women’s participation in hospitality, handicrafts and other tourism-related activities.

At the same time, sustainable and responsible tourism must remain central to future development. Protecting the region’s fragile mountain environment, maintaining the cleanliness of lakes and tourist destinations, preserving cultural heritage and ensuring responsible waste management are essential for long-term growth. Encouraging community participation, improving tourist facilities and promoting lesser-known destinations can help distribute tourism benefits more evenly while reducing pressure on popular locations.

The Best Tourist Destination Award at India Travel Mart Goa 2026 is therefore more than an honour for the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department. It represents an opportunity to strengthen the region’s tourism identity, attract new partnerships and communicate its immense potential to a wider audience. With its unmatched natural beauty, welcoming communities, rich traditions and expanding range of tourism experiences, Jammu and Kashmir has all the ingredients to emerge as a leading year-round destination in India. The recognition provides renewed encouragement to continue these efforts and ensure that tourism becomes an increasingly important driver of economic development, employment generation and prosperity across the Union Territory.
