Srinagar, Oct 2 (JKNS): Chief Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Atal Dulloo on Friday said the ideals and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi remain deeply relevant in contemporary society and must be reflected not only in public life but also in the way people think and live.
Dulloo, while addressing the gathering at SKICC Srinagar in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti commemorative event, as per news agency JKNS, said truth was the fundamental basis of Gandhi’s philosophy and represented the foundation of a just and humane society.
He said Gandhi’s message of non-violence was not merely about staying away from physical violence, but also about respecting others through one’s thoughts, words and actions.
The Chief Secretary said Gandhi’s vision of self-reliance assumes particular significance for Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need to encourage local skills, agriculture, handicrafts and locally produced goods.
He also underlined the importance of recognising the contribution of farmers, artisans, sanitation workers, teachers and scientists, saying every section contributing to society deserves dignity and respect.
Dulloo said Gandhi’s emphasis on simplicity, restraint and responsible use of resources also carries great relevance amid growing environmental challenges and climate change.
He observed that wealth and resources should not be utilised merely for individual interests, but should also contribute towards the welfare of society and serve the larger public good.
The Chief Secretary said Jammu and Kashmir, with its rich cultural heritage, has a special responsibility to uphold the values of mutual respect, harmony and peaceful coexistence.
He said a peaceful society can be built only when people respect each other’s beliefs, traditions and identities.
Dulloo further said Gandhi’s true remembrance would not be achieved merely through speeches and ceremonies, but by translating his principles of truth and service into everyday conduct.
He said Gandhi did not leave behind a ready-made system to follow, but offered a way of thinking and living that continues to inspire generations. (JKNS)
