Srinagar, Sept 25 (JKNS): The J&K Sports Council continued its grassroots sports initiatives across the Union Territory, facilitating competitions in Pencak Silat, Wushu, Yogasana and Chess in Doda, Shopian, Samba and Srinagar to provide young athletes with competitive exposure and opportunities to showcase their talent.

In Bhaderwah, Doda, a special Pencak Silat competition was organised at Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School under the My Youth My Pride initiative. Around 30 players participated enthusiastically, while nearly 40 spectators witnessed the competition. The activity provided young athletes an opportunity to gain competitive exposure at the grassroots level. Refreshments were also provided to the participants.
In Shopian, the three-day ASMITA Wushu Women’s League and District Wushu Championship concluded at the Indoor Sports Stadium, Arhama.
The championship witnessed participation of more than 300 players from the Khelo India Wushu Centre and various schools and clubs across the district.
The competition provided a dedicated platform for young athletes, particularly women, to demonstrate their skills and gain valuable competitive experience.
The Khelo India Wushu Centre Shopian emerged as the overall champion, while Shahi Hamdan School secured the runner-up position.
In Samba, the 7th District Samba Yogasana Sports Championship 2026 was held at the Indoor Stadium, with participation of more than 60 athletes across different age categories. Young participants competed in Sub-Junior, Cadet and Senior categories, besides Artistic Yogasana events.
The championship provided athletes with an opportunity to showcase their skills and gain district-level competitive exposure.
The event also featured an inspiring performance by athletes in the special children category, highlighting the importance of inclusive sporting opportunities for all sections of society.
Meanwhile, Srinagar also hosted the 6th Kashmir FIDE International Rating Chess Tournament 2026 at the Indoor Stadium, Polo Ground, from September 25 and will end on 26 September.
The tournament is being organised by the Kashmir Chess Club in collaboration with the All J&K Chess Association under the aegis of the J&K Sports Council, providing chess players an opportunity to compete in a rated tournament.
The activities across Doda, Shopian, Samba and Srinagar reflect the continued focus on strengthening grassroots sports and creating competitive platforms across districts. Through district-level competitions, dedicated facilities and support for sporting events, the J&K Sports Council is working to bring structured sporting opportunities closer to youth, including those from rural and far-flung areas.
The initiatives are aimed at identifying emerging talent, encouraging wider participation and providing young athletes with a pathway towards higher-level competitions while promoting a healthy and active sporting culture across Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
