POONCH JAMMU, AUGUST 28 (JKNS): National Sports Day is observed across India every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players the country has ever produced. Known worldwide as the “Wizard of Hockey”, Dhyan Chand remains an enduring symbol of sporting excellence, discipline, patriotism and dedication to the nation.
Born on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand rose from humble beginnings to become an international sporting icon. His extraordinary command over the hockey stick, remarkable ball control and ability to read the game earned him admiration across the world. His contribution to Indian hockey was instrumental in establishing India as a dominant force in international hockey during the golden era of the sport.
Three Olympic Gold Medals
Major Dhyan Chand was a key member of the Indian hockey team that won three consecutive Olympic gold medals—at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
The 1928 Olympic Games marked India’s emergence as a major force in international hockey. Dhyan Chand played a crucial role in India’s campaign and continued to demonstrate his extraordinary abilities at the 1932 and 1936 Games.
His career is remembered for an astonishing number of goals and performances that often appeared almost impossible to opposing players. His ability to dribble past defenders and place the ball precisely into the net earned him the legendary reputation of being a “magician” with the hockey stick.
Service to the Nation and Sporting Excellence
Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army at a young age, where his sporting talent developed alongside his commitment to military service. His life reflected a rare combination of discipline, physical fitness, national service and sporting excellence.

The Historic Berlin Olympics Final
The 1936 Berlin Olympics remains one of the most celebrated chapters in the history of Indian hockey. India faced host nation Germany in the final before a large crowd, with German leader Adolf Hitler also reportedly present.
India dominated the contest and eventually defeated Germany 8–1, securing its third successive Olympic gold medal.
Dhyan Chand’s performance in the final became part of hockey folklore. Several popular accounts have circulated over the years about him playing barefoot during the match after removing his shoes, although some details of the story have been embellished through retelling.
Another famous story claims that Hitler was so impressed by Dhyan Chand’s abilities that he offered him German citizenship, a senior military position and other benefits. However, historians have questioned the authenticity of some details surrounding this episode, and there is no strong documentary evidence establishing the entire story as it is popularly narrated.
What remains beyond dispute is Dhyan Chand’s extraordinary performance and the enormous respect he commanded as one of the finest hockey players of his generation.
A Lasting National Legacy
Major Dhyan Chand continued to remain associated with hockey even after his competitive playing career ended. He trained and inspired generations of players and remained a respected figure in Indian sport.
He passed away on December 3, 1979, in New Delhi, after battling liver cancer. His death marked the end of the life of a sporting legend whose contribution had already become an inseparable part of India’s sporting history.
To commemorate his birth anniversary, the Government of India declared August 29 as National Sports Day in 2012. The day is dedicated not only to remembering Dhyan Chand but also to recognising athletes, coaches and sporting personalities who contribute to the country’s sporting culture.
National Sports Day also serves as an opportunity to encourage young people to participate in sports and understand the importance of discipline, teamwork, perseverance and physical fitness.
Renewed Call for Bharat Ratna
On the occasion of National Sports Day, a fresh appeal has also been raised for conferring the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, posthumously on Major Dhyan Chand.
As a passionate hockey lover and a social activist, Taranpreet Singh has urged the Government of India to consider Major Dhyan Chand for the country’s highest civilian honour, describing him as an unparalleled sporting icon whose achievements brought immense recognition and pride to India.
The demand for the Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand has been raised publicly on several occasions in the past, reflecting the widespread admiration for his contribution to Indian sport.
Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy extends far beyond the medals he won. At a time when India was still under British rule, his performances on the international stage gave millions of Indians a reason to celebrate and take pride in their country’s sporting identity.
An Inspiration for Future Generations
More than four decades after his death, Dhyan Chand continues to occupy a unique place in India’s sporting history. His name is associated not merely with hockey but with the values of hard work, discipline, humility and dedication.
