Srinagar, Aug 27 (JKNS): The Jammu ans Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday chaired a review meeting on waterlogging and Srinagar’s growing drainage challenges, directing the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to strengthen both emergency response and long-term drainage infrastructure.

Details available with news agency JKNS, Reviewing the SMC’s proposed five-year plan, the Chief Minister emphasised restoration of natural drains, enhancement of dewatering capacity and separation of sewerage systems from stormwater networks.

Omar directed the SMC to formulate emergency Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure a swift response during periods of heavy rainfall, alongside preparation of a sustainable long-term drainage plan for Srinagar.

He also called for launching a civic awareness campaign to discourage residents from dumping polythene and other waste into drains, stressing the need for public cooperation to address recurring waterlogging.

The Chief Minister said the review was aimed at developing a comprehensive approach to Srinagar’s drainage challenges, combining immediate preparedness with long-term infrastructure measures.
