Srinagar, Aug 3 (JKNS): Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts wreaked havoc in parts of Kargil district, damaging infrastructure, disrupting road connectivity and prompting large-scale rescue and relief operations by the Army, Police and Civil Administration, officials said on Monday.
Officials said Hardass and Tumail villages were hit by flash floods following intense rainfall on Sunday evening, resulting in inundation of residential areas and damage to roads and other public infrastructure.
Emergency response teams and local authorities rushed to the affected areas to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to residents.
According to the Army, troops of the Forever in Operations Division launched prompt rescue and relief operations after a cloudburst struck Gund in Hardass, where flash floods snapped road connectivity and left several villagers stranded.
Army personnel evacuated affected residents, administered first aid and distributed drinking water, food and other essential supplies despite challenging weather conditions.
In another affected area, Army personnel, in coordination with the civil administration, assisted in clearing debris and restoring road connectivity, water supply and electricity to facilitate ongoing relief efforts.
Earlier, on Saturday, a cloudburst near Mina-2 in Minamarg triggered flash floods and landslides, affecting four temporary shelters of Bakerwal families comprising nearly 20 people.
Police said personnel from the Minamarg Police Post immediately launched a rescue operation and safely shifted all affected families to safer locations.
A vehicle was also washed away by floodwaters during the incident; however, all occupants escaped without injuries.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Drass–Srinagar National Highway remained temporarily suspended due to landslides and accumulation of debris, with restoration work underway.
Police have advised commuters, tourists and local residents to avoid crossing overflowing streams, water channels and other flood-prone areas until weather conditions improve.
Officials said Drass Deputy Commissioner Imteeaz Kacho also visited Matayen and Pandrass villages to assess the situation, review the damage and interact with affected residents regarding relief and developmental requirements. (JKNS)
