Women’s Empowerment Takes Centre Stage at GCW M.A. Road on International Women’s Day

Srinagar, Mar 16 (JKNS): The Government College for Women M.A. Road in Srinagar celebrated International Women’s Day with a vibrant programme organised by the Women Study Centre, bringing together students, faculty members and prominent personalities to highlight the achievements of women and encourage greater participation of women in leadership, entrepreneurship and public service.

As per news agency JKNS, GCW M.A. Road, Srinagar, celebrated International Women’s Day with a vibrant programme at the College Auditorium, bringing together students, faculty members and distinguished guests from diverse fields to reflect on women’s achievements and empowerment.

In her welcome address, as per news agency JKNS, Principal of the college, (Prof.) Dr. Yasmeen Farooq emphasized the importance of education, resilience and collective action in advancing gender equality.

“Women’s empowerment begins with education and confidence. Institutions like ours nurture young women not only to excel academically but also to lead with courage, empathy and integrity in every sphere of society,” Prof. Yasmeen said.

The event featured inspiring talks by speakers from diverse sectors. They shared their professional journeys in a bid to motivate the young female students.

Sleet Shah, JKPS, who is currently serving as DySP Headquarters, highlighted the growing role of women in public service.

“Women in public service represent strength and responsibility. When more women step into leadership and decision-making roles, society becomes more balanced, inclusive, and responsive to people’s needs,” she said.

Dr. Rukhsaar Syed, CEO of Khalis Foods spoke about women’s entrepreneurship and leadership.

“Entrepreneurship gives women the power to shape their own futures. When women build businesses, they do not just create economic value they create opportunities and inspiration for entire communities,” said Dr. Rukhsaar who is a pioneering food entrepreneur and gained national recognition as the first Kashmiri contestant to participate in and reach the final stages of MasterChef India.

Nusrat Gazala, Divisional Sports Officer (Kashmir) with the J&K Sports Council, who has also been an accomplished sportsperson, shared her inspiring journey.

“From climbing mountains to competing on national platforms, I learned that courage grows with every step you take. Girls should never limit themselves whether in sports, adventure, or leadership,” she said while encouraging female students to participate in sports.

On the occasion, a MOU was signed between the college and the Sports Council. As part of the MoU, the Sports Council will organise a self-defence course for the girl students of the college.

Earlier, the programme began with a detailed introduction to the event by Convener, Women Study Centre of the college, Dr. Abina Habib.

A ceremonial Izband ritual was held to honour the guests, followed by the presentation of mementos. The programme also included a spiritual segment featuring an Islamic programme by Dr. Asiya Nazir and a Naat recitation.

Students actively participated in the celebration through creative presentations, including a poem recitation by Maliha (6th Semester) and a short speech by Maheen (6th Semester) highlighting the aspirations and challenges of young women today.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Malik Roshan, expressing gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and students for making the celebration meaningful and inspiring.
The event served as an important platform to celebrate women’s achievements and inspire students to contribute actively toward a more inclusive and empowered society. (JKNS)
