Srinagar, Mar 14 (JKNS): Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party, on Saturday said that Islam reached Kashmir through Iran, highlighting the deep historical, cultural and spiritual connections between the two regions.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, as per news agency JKNS, Mufti said that a meeting of former MLAs of her party adopted a resolution expressing solidarity with the people of Iran. She also appreciated the people of Kashmir for holding peaceful protests in support of the Iranian people.

She appealed to the people of Kashmir to pray for the people of Iran and the Muslim Ummah, and urged Muslim countries to extend support to Iran during the current situation.

Mufti said that conflicts and wars only lead to instability and economic disruption across the world, adding that such developments ultimately harm ordinary people and global peace.

She also appealed to the administration headed by Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, to reconsider the decision to arrest people who participated in protests and demanded that those still lodged in jails be released.

Referring to the revocation of detention of Sonam Wangchuk, Mufti said the move was welcome though such action should not have been taken in the first place, adding that Wangchuk had raised important concerns related to environmental protection.

She also mentioned the case of Shabir Ahmad Shah, saying that his daughter had struggled legally to seek justice for her father. Mufti added that while some people can approach courts for relief, many economically weaker prisoners cannot afford lengthy legal battles and therefore deserve attention and support. (JKNS)
