Akhoon had served as a Minister for six years and earlier began his political journey at the grassroots level, where he was elected unopposed as a councillor. Members recalled that he remained deeply connected with the people and consistently worked for development in remote and high-altitude areas of Kargil.

He was re-elected as MLA in the 2008 Assembly elections and subsequently served as a Minister in the Omar Abdullah-led government, where he represented the aspirations of the Ladakh region in the Cabinet.

Several legislators cutting across party lines shared their memories of the departed leader, stating that he played a vital role in voicing public concerns and strengthening democratic institutions in the region.

Describing him as a seasoned politician and a respected figure in the House, members said his demise has created a void that will be difficult to fill.

The Assembly observed silence as a mark of respect and extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for peace to the departed soul. (JKNS)
