Srinagar, Feb 2 (JKNS): A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Monday, causing panic among residents and forcing many people to rush out of their homes, particularly in densely populated downtown areas.

According to details shared by weatherman as per news agency JKNS, the tremor occurred at around 5:35 am with its epicentre in Budgam district at coordinates 33.9°N and 74.76°E.

 

The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres, as per primary data released by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and shared by Kashmir Weather. The tremors were felt across several parts of the Valley, including Charar-i-Sharief, Pulwama, Srinagar and Shopian.

 

Eyewitnesses said people were seen coming out onto roads and open spaces in downtown localities, where residential structures are closely packed, following the sudden jolt. However, there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property till the filing of this report.

 

Weather at the epicentre was reported to be overcast, with the temperature hovering around minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, humidity at 95 per cent and light winds blowing from the west-southwest. (JKNS)
