J&K Govt Orders Inquiry Into Alleged Suicide of GDC Doda Student; Faculty Member Suspended

Srinagar, Jan 21 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Government has constituted a high-level committee to inquire into the alleged suicide of a student of Government Degree College (GDC), Doda, officials said.

A Government Order No. 20-JK(HE) of 2026, dated January 2, 2026 as per news agency JKNS, a three-member committee of the Higher Education Department has been formed to probe the incident of the reported suicide committed on January 16, 2026, by Ms. Saba Banoo, a student of GDC Doda.

 

The inquiry committee comprises Dr. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department; Sanjay Kumar Tickoo (JKAS), Deputy Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department; and Syed Ishrat Parvez, Under Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department.

 

The committee has been directed to submit its report within a period of seven days, the order reads.

 

Meanwhile, pending the outcome of the inquiry, the government has placed a faculty member of the college under suspension.

 

As per Government Order No. 21-JK(HE) of 2026, dated January 20, 2026, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad, Assistant Professor (Commerce) at Government Degree College, Doda, has been suspended with immediate effect.

 

The order further states that the suspended faculty member shall remain attached with the office of the Director Colleges, Jammu and Kashmir, until further orders. (JKNS)
