Higher Reaches, Some Plains Receive Light Snowfall; Gulmarg, Pahalgam Shivers at -7.6°C & -7.2°C

Srinagar, Jan 7 (JKNS): A weak western disturbance triggered light to moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir over the past 24 hours, while some plains also witnessed a brief snow spell.

Reports reaching news agency JKNS said that the Pir Panjal range and higher reaches of South Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while Shopian plains experienced light snowfall during the period.

Peer Ki Gali recorded around 5–6 inches of fresh snowfall, while Sinthan Top and Margan Top received nearly 6 inches each.

Reports said that higher reaches of Kukernag also witnessed light snowfall, with Daksum receiving about 1–2 inches, while Vailoo recorded between 1 cm to 1 inch of fresh snow.

Higher reaches of Pahalgam and Kulgam districts also received light snowfall, adding to the wintry conditions.

Meanwhile, data compiled by independent weather channel Kashmir Weather, as accessed by news agency JKNS, indicated sub-zero minimum temperatures across several parts of the Kashmir Valley.

In the Kashmir region, Srinagar recorded a low of -1.6°C, while Qazigund settled at 0.1°C. Tourist destinations witnessed intense cold, with Pahalgam at -7.2°C, Gulmarg at -7.6°C, and Sonamarg plunging to -10.1°C. Kupwara recorded -3.6°C, Kokernag -2.3°C, Budgam -2.4°C, Baramulla -3.0°C, Pulwama -5.1°C, Shopian -4.3°C, and Zethan Rafiabad -4.8°C. Srinagar Airport recorded -2.2°C, while Awantipora stood at -1.6°C. Pampore and Kulgam recorded 1.0°C each. Minimum temperature data from Bandipora and Ganderbal remained unavailable.

In the Jammu region, temperatures stayed comparatively higher, with Jammu city recording 8.7°C and Jammu Airport 9.3°C.

Banihal recorded 2.3°C, Batote 3.1°C, Katra 6.4°C, Bhaderwah -2.6°C, Kathua 7.8°C, Udhampur 6.6°C, Ramban 7.2°C, Samba 6.6°C, Rajouri 1.0°C, Kishtwar 0.1°C, Reasi 8.3°C, and Doda 2.5°C, while data from Poonch was not available.

In the Ladakh region, harsh cold conditions continued with Leh at -13.4°C, Drass recording a biting -22.8°C, Nyoma at -20.2°C, Kargil at -11.6°C, and Padum at -16.8°C.

Weatherman said cold conditions are likely to persist as winter continues to tighten its grip across the Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
