The Majlis emerged as a solemn yet hopeful call to reconnect with Kashmir’s timeless Sufi inheritance, as unchecked materialism and growing social maladies increasingly threaten to erode values that once defined the land through peace, compassion, humility and inner reflection.

Proceedings began with a soul-soothing recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by heartfelt Naat-Khwani that enveloped the gathering in an atmosphere of serenity and devotion. Eminent scholars and Imams then addressed the congregation, eloquently reflecting on the transformative role Sufism has historically played in shaping Kashmiri society.

Speakers recalled that Kashmir was once revered as a living sanctuary of spiritual wisdom, a land where self-introspection, simplicity, detachment from excessive worldly possessions and service to humanity formed the very rhythm of life. Through their spiritual insight and moral authority, Sufi saints transformed the Valley into a cradle of tolerance, brotherhood and divine love, seamlessly harmonizing Islamic mysticism with indigenous traditions to nurture social harmony.

However, participants expressed deep concern that these sacred ideals are gradually being eclipsed by rampant material pursuits.

“The message of peace, compassion and shared humanity that was once the moral heartbeat of this land has been pushed to the margins,” observed a senior scholar. “This moral drift has hardened hearts, weakened empathy and fostered dangerous self-centeredness, leaving society exposed to rising social evils.”

A particularly poignant moment came when a respected Kashmir -based scholar addressed the alarming escalation of drug abuse in the Valley. Referring to recent disclosures by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, who revealed that drug addiction has tripled over the past three and a half years especially with heroin use surging disturbingly among the youth.

“If this does not awaken us, what will? Sufi scholars must rise as torchbearers of conscience. It is our duty to guide people back to their inner truth, to help them live dignified lives free from vice, and to illuminate society through righteousness, compassion, social service, and the spread of education, the scholar warned.”

Attended by nearly a hundred participants, the Majlis concluded on a note of resolve and renewed purpose. The gathering collectively pledged to intensify efforts to revive and disseminate the teachings of Kashmir’s great Sufi luminaries from Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali (Nund Rishi) to Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani and pledged to organize similar soul-elevating gatherings in the future and re-anchoring spiritual discourse in public life.

This Majlis-e-Tasawwuf stands as a beacon of hope, a quiet yet powerful spiritual renaissance rooted in the Valley’s own traditional legacy. As Kashmir confronts complex modern challenges, the gathering reaffirmed a timeless truth that lasting healing and social renewal can only emerge through inner awakening, moral clarity and collective compassion. The key take away was the values that once illuminated this land continue to hold the power to do so again. (JKNS)
