Kashmir in Freeze: Pulwama, Shopian at –4.4°C, Zojila Crashes to –16°C

Srinagar, Dec 17 (JKNS): Intense cold wave conditions continued to prevail across Jammu and Kashmir, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley witnessing sub-zero night temperatures, while higher reaches experienced extreme cold.

As per data compiled by independent weather channel Kashmir Weather as pwr news agency JKNS, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of –1.6°C during the intervening night. Qazigund registered –3.0°C, while Pahalgam settled at –2.8°C. Several south Kashmir areas remained the coldest in the Valley, with Pulwama and Shopian recording –4.4°C each, followed by Anantnag at –4.2°C and Pampore at –4.0°C.

Kupwara and Bandipora recorded –2.2°C each, while Baramulla settled at –3.5°C. Srinagar Airport registered –2.6°C and Awantipora –3.2°C. Tourist resort Gulmarg recorded a minimum of 1.6°C, while Sonamarg stood at 0.6°C. Zojila Pass witnessed severe cold with temperatures plunging to –16.0°C.

In the Jammu region, comparatively milder weather conditions prevailed. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 9.0°C, Katra 11.1°C and Kathua 8.2°C. Banihal and Bhaderwah recorded 3.4°C each, while Udhampur settled at 3.3°C. Rajouri emerged as the coldest place in the region at 1.8°C.

Meanwhile, Ladakh continued to reel under freezing conditions, with Leh recording –6.3°C, Kargil –5.8°C and Nubra Valley –5.0°C.

Weather experts said cold conditions are expected to persist across the Valley and higher reaches over the coming days, with chilly nights likely to continue. (JKNS)
