BARAMULLA: In a remarkable initiative, the Sheep Husbandry Department, Baramulla, organized a Mega Sheep Mandi (Buyer–Seller Meet) at the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) Headquarters, Shrakwara.
The event marked the first-ever organized livestock trading platform in the area, enabling direct interaction between breeders and buyers without the involvement of middlemen.
Livestock farmers from various villages of Block Wagoora participated enthusiastically, bringing their animals for sale. The Department provided all necessary facilities, including animal holding pens, health check-ups, and body weight assessments to ensure smooth and transparent transactions.
The event was formally inaugurated by District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO) Baramulla, Dr. Showkat Ahangar, in the presence of AMO Baramulla, VAS Kohlina, VAS Shrakwara, among other officers and a large gathering of breeders and farmers.
A total of 423 animals were registered in the Mandi, of which 222 animals were successfully sold, generating an impressive revenue of Rs 23.21 lakh.
The event received overwhelming appreciation from both buyers and sellers. Participants expressed gratitude to the Department for organizing such an initiative and suggested that the Mandi be held regularly every month at a dedicated and well-equipped venue with proper shelter and infrastructure for livestock.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ahangar commended the participants for their active involvement and reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to empowering farmers under the Government’s vision of doubling farmers’ income. He emphasized that such initiatives not only promote employment among youth but also facilitate better market access for their produce.
