Srinagar, Sep 2 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness widespread rainfall over the next 60 hours, with authorities issuing alerts for rising water levels, flash floods, and landslides.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng popularly known on its social media handles with the name Kashmir Weather, as per news agency JKNS said that parts of the Jammu region are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with rivers and streams expected to swell, in some places crossing flood alarm levels.

“In the Kashmir region, rainfall intensity will be comparatively lower, but areas over the Pir Panjal mountains and higher reaches of Kulgam, Shopian, and Anantnag may see heavy showers. The Jhelum river’s water level is likely to rise noticeably,” Faizan said.

He warned of thunderstorms with gusty winds, the possibility of flash floods and cloudbursts, and vulnerabilities of mountain passes to landslides and falling stones.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities informed JKNS that vehicular movement on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been suspended due to heavy rains. Sinthan Top road also remains closed. Traffic, however, is moving normally on Mughal Road and SSG Road.

Commuters have been advised to avoid NH-44 and plan their journeys carefully until the situation improves. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the spell of intense rainfall. (JKNS)
