Srinagar, Aug 11 (JKNS): Welcoming the arrival of the first-ever freight train to the Valley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir spokesman Altaf Thakur hailed the development as a “game-changer” for the Union Territory’s economy and fruit industry.

In a statement as per news agency JKNS, Thakur said the freight train will significantly benefit the fruit industry, which forms the backbone of Kashmir’s agrarian economy, by ensuring faster transportation of apples, pears, and other produce to national markets. “This is a historic day for Kashmir. Our fruit growers will no longer have to face long delays and uncertainties on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway due to landslides or weather disruptions. The train will guarantee quick, reliable, and cost-effective transportation,” he said.

Highlighting the broader economic benefits, Thakur added that the new freight service would open avenues for exporting other local products — including handicrafts, saffron, dry fruits, and horticultural produce — with reduced transport costs and transit times. “It’s not just a boost to the economy; it’s a step towards integrating Kashmir more deeply into the national and global supply chains,” he noted.

The BJP leader credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for delivering on promises of infrastructure development and economic integration in the region. “Under PM Modi, Kashmir is witnessing unprecedented growth. The freight train is another example of his commitment to empowering our farmers, traders, and artisans,” Thakur said.

He said With the freight rail link now operational, will see reduction in post-harvest losses and better price realisation for farmers, which could transform the region’s horticulture sector. (JKNS)
