Kupwara, 26 June : In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Kupwara Police organized a comprehensive Drug Awareness Rally on 26th June 2025 with the objective of generating mass awareness regarding the ill effects of drug abuse and reinforcing the collective resolve to combat this societal menace.

The event was formally inaugurated with the welcome address of the Worthy Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Shri Gulam Jeelani Wani (JKPS). The occasion was also graced by the presence of Additional Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Deputy Superintendent of Police Headquarters, Deputy Superintendent of Police DAR, Station House Officer Kupwara, and Duty Officers from various Police Posts. Their presence reaffirmed the commitment of the police department to eradicate the threat of drug addiction and trafficking from the district.

The rally witnessed overwhelming participation from students,local youth ,various sections of civil society, local residents, ASHA workers, ICDS functionaries, and other concerned stakeholders.

The rally commenced from the Dak Bungalow Kupwara and culminated at the Martyrs’ Memorial, Regipora Chowk, where participants raised anti-drug slogans and displayed placards emphasizing the urgent need for societal vigilance and responsibility.

The primary objective of the rally was to sensitize the general public about the dangers posed by narcotic substances, and to foster a shared sense of duty among citizens towards eliminating drug abuse. On the sidelines of the event, a pledge was administered to all participants, wherein they vowed to act proactively in the fight against drug addiction and its associated harms.

Several critical concerns and grassroots-level observations regarding the drug menace were articulated by students and community participants, underscoring the need for sustained awareness and enforcement efforts.

It was reiterated during the programme that Kupwara Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics and psychotropic substances. To this effect, numerous FIRs have been registered, and stringent legal action has been initiated against identified drug peddlers and traffickers. Simultaneously, the police continue to implement community outreach, education, and rehabilitation initiatives, aimed at preventive intervention and social reintegration of affected individuals.

Kupwara Police remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the community from the scourge of drug abuse. The department shall continue to take proactive and lawful measures to ensure a safer, healthier, and drug-free society.
