Sopore: Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Iftikhar Talib on Friday issued a firm warning against drug dealers, miscreants, and fake news spreaders, stating that such individuals will not be tolerated in Sopore during his tenure.

Speaking during Thana Diwas SP Talib as per news agency JKNS said, “Till the time I am posted in Sopore, I will not spare those involved in drugs or unlawful activities. Sopore is not a place for such people.”

“We can only succeed if citizens cooperate with the police in curbing drug abuse, traffic violations, and other crimes,” he said.

Talib recalled that shortly after taking charge, he convened a meeting with all Station House Officers and SDPOs. “I instructed them that once law and order is under control, our focus must shift completely towards fighting drugs,” he said.

Addressing the issue of traffic violations, Talib said, “I have ordered strict action against visible violations. This applies to everyone even police vehicles must follow traffic rules. No sirens or rule-breaking will be allowed unless it’s an emergency.”

He also spoke about the growing menace of cybercrime, calling it one of the most serious challenges facing society today. “Where I was posted previously, cybercrime was widespread. In the coming decade, even major crimes like murders may happen through cyber means. The more we rely on technology, the more vulnerable we become,” he warned.

To counter this, Talib announced the establishment of a fully functional Cyber Police Station in Sopore. “Earlier, people had to travel to Srinagar for cybercrime complaints. In a few days, a dedicated cyber police unit will start functioning right here in Sopore,” he said.

Speaking about the spread of fake news, Talib recalled a recent case in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. “A local youth falsely claimed on social media that a resident of Bomai Sopore had died. Our investigation found that the person had passed away in 2021 due to illness. The individual who spread the fake news is now behind bars,” he said.

Reiterating his stand, Talib said, “As long as I serve in Sopore, anyone who disturbs peace or is involved in drugs will have no place here. Sopore belongs only to law-abiding citizens,” he added. (JKNS)
