Srinagar: To examine the impact of environmental stress on freshwater springs, the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir (KU), hosted a special lecture ‘Checking the Pulse and Taking the Temperature: How Do Springs Respond to Environmental Stress’ by Prof. Alan Fryar from the University of Kentucky, USA.

The lecture focused on the effects of environmental stressors, including climate change, on freshwater springs and their sustainability. It provided valuable insights into how groundwater systems are impacted by rising temperatures, pollution, and human interventions.

While chairing the lecture Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, emphasized the critical relevance of the topic and said, “Himalayan glaciers and springs have been significantly affected by climate change, leading to the drying up of several water sources in the valley. This lecture is timely and essential in raising awareness among scholars and students about these pressing environmental challenges.”

In his lecture, Prof. Alan Fryar highlighted the global significance of studying spring ecosystems and their response to climate stress.

“Understanding how springs react to environmental pressures is crucial for sustainable water management. The knowledge gained through such research can help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on water resources,” he said.

Head, Department of Earth Sciences KU, Prof. Gh. Jeelani, stressed on the importance of research-driven discussions on water sustainability and the importance of the role of scientific inquiry in addressing environmental challenges.

The lecture was attended by research scholars and students from the Departments of Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Geography, and Geoinformatics. It concluded with an engaging discussion, where participants explored ways to enhance water conservation efforts in the region.
