Srinagar : A 62-year-old man from Srinagar, battling advanced pancreatic cancer complicated by portal vein thrombosis (PVT), has successfully undergone a complex surgery at “Fortis Cancer Institute, Mohali.”
The intricate “Radical Antegrade Modular Pancreatosplenectomy (RAMPS) with Type 1 Portal Vein Reconstruction” was performed by a team led by “Dr. Jitender Rohila, Consultant, GI Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery” at Fortis Mohali.
Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Dr. Jitender Rohila, as per the news agency—JKNS said the patient had been suffering from severe abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and significant weight loss for three months. He said, despite undergoing “three cycles of chemotherapy in Srinagar”, his condition worsened, leading him to seek advanced treatment at Fortis Mohali.
“A thorough medical evaluation, including blood tests and CT scans, confirmed the presence of an advanced pancreatic tumor with main portal vein thrombosis,” Dr. Rohila said, adding as given the complexity of the case, doctors opted for vascular reconstruction, a procedure that restores blood flow in blocked or damaged vessels.
The surgery was successfully performed, and the patient was discharged just six days later. “He has now fully recovered and is leading a normal life,” Dr. Rohila added.
The doctor also highlighted such complex procedures are conducted only at select hospitals across India, including “Fortis Mohali,” and underscored the need for a specialized oncology care infrastructure in Kashmir to reduce dependence on treatment outside the region.
With gastrointestinal cancers on the rise in Kashmir, experts stress the urgent need for advanced cancer treatment facilities within the Valley.—(JKNS)
