Nestled in the serene village of Teetwal in the Kupwara district, along the banks of the Kishanganga River in Jammu and Kashmir. The Sharda Temple stands as a monument of cultural, historical, and spiritual significance. Dedicated to Goddess Sharda, the deity of wisdom and learning, this temple has been a beacon for scholars and devotees for centuries.

The Sharda Temple is an ancient shrine believed to date back to the 8th century. Historically, it was one of the most revered centres of learning in the Indian subcontinent, often referred to as the “Sharda Peeth”. The region’s ancient texts and traditions identify it as a prominent pilgrimage site, attracting scholars and seekers of wisdom from all across the globe like Greece, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, Tibet and China. The temple’s location near the Sharda River (now known as the Kishanganga) added to its sanctity, as rivers in Indian tradition are often considered sacred. The temple had an extensive library and once was imparting knowledge to 5000 scholars. Despite its rich history, Sharda Peeth suffered extensive destruction over the years. The once-thriving centre faced severe damage at the hands of Sikandar Butshikan, who was notorious for targeting Hindu and Buddhist sites.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY IN KASHMIR: THE CRY OF THE MOUNTAINS AND THE SILENCE OF THE VALLEYS

The final blow came during the partition of India when the Sharda temple was set ablaze during tribal invasions and the ensuing violence which led to the original temple becoming part of PoK. Due to this the area was cut off for devotees which further led to the abandonment of the pilgrimage site.To preserve Sharda Peeth’s spiritual significance and provide a place for worshippers to continue their pilgrimage, a new temple was established in Teetwal, a village situated near the LC in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The new temple in Teetwal aims to serve as both a symbolic and functional counterpart to the historic Sharda Peeth, ensuring that worshippers can continue their sacred rituals despite the surrounding challenges so that the pilgrimage tradition can thrive in the current climate.

The temple is positioned in a remote area, which adds both to its spiritual allure and to the challenges faced by visitors. The temple is constructed with traditional architectural styles that reflect its historical roots so that devotees can experience a sense of continuity with the ancient traditions. Sharda Peeth was not just a religious site but also an intellectual hub. It is believed to have housed one of the earliest universities in South Asia, where texts on philosophy, science, and the arts were studied.

After decades of neglect, the Sharda Temple has recently seen a resurgence in attention. The government and local communities have taken steps to restore the site and promote it as a symbol of shared heritage. In 2023, the temple reopened to pilgrims for the first time in over 70 years, marking a historic moment for cultural and spiritual revival in the region. The reopening was celebrated with great fervour, with pilgrims from across the country visiting the temple to pay their respects. This revival has also underscored the need for preserving heritage sites as bridges between the past and the present.

Teetwal, the village hosting the Sharda Temple, is a picturesque locale that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and rivers. Visitors can enjoy the serene environment while exploring the temple and its historical significance. Accessible by road, Teetwal is becoming a popular destination for those seeking spiritual solace and a connection with history.

The establishment of the Sharda Peeth Temple in Teetwal has significantly benefited the local economy and community. The arrival of pilgrims has resulted in a higher demand for local services, thereby generating job opportunities for residents. This surge in economic activity has not only contributed to the development of the region but has also enhanced the living standards of the local population.

The Sharda Temple in Teetwal is more than just a religious structure; it is a symbol of the region’s rich history and enduring faith. Its revival is a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and fostering unity through shared traditions. As the temple regains its prominence, it continues to inspire generations with its legacy of wisdom and spirituality.
