Social media has dramatically reshaped the way people in Kashmir communicate, access information, and express their opinions. With over 30% of the population having internet access, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become integral to daily life. A recent survey highlights that 70% of internet users in Kashmir are active on social media, predominantly aged between 18 and 35. This demographic is pivotal, as it underscores the significant role young people play in driving the social media revolution in the region.

However, while social media presents numerous opportunities, it also comes with notable challenges. One of the growing concerns is the excessive amount of time spent on these platforms, particularly among adolescents. Many individuals are becoming increasingly disconnected from family and friends, preferring virtual interactions over face-to-face communication. It is not uncommon for people to return home after spending time with loved ones only to retreat to their phones, substituting meaningful personal connections with digital ones.

This issue is particularly pronounced among students, who are increasingly drawn into the addictive nature of social media. As a result, academic performance is suffering. With more time spent on platforms than on studying, the focus on education is waning, and academic achievements are in decline. The impact of social media on Kashmir’s youth is undeniable, and its repercussions on educational outcomes are concerning.

Another worrying trend is the spiritual detachment experienced by many Kashmiris. Social media often occupies more of individuals’ time than religious practices such as prayer or reading the Holy Quran. This shift has contributed to a decline in religious values and a sense of alienation from faith. For a region with a deeply rooted spiritual and cultural heritage, these changes are particularly troubling.

On the other hand, social media has also become a powerful tool for cultural expression and survival in Kashmir. Adolescents are using platforms like Instagram and YouTube to showcase the natural beauty of the region, share cultural narratives, and challenge stereotypes. In this sense, social media provides a means for young Kashmiris to assert their identity and preserve their heritage in the face of external pressures and misrepresentations.

However, the role of social media in Kashmir is not without its darker side. The spread of misinformation and propaganda is a major issue, with rumors and hoaxes circulating rapidly on platforms like WhatsApp and Twitter. This dissemination of false information often fuels social conflict and mistrust among different groups, further complicating an already tense environment in the region.

To address these challenges, experts suggest the need for enhanced digital literacy, stronger control over content, and the promotion of ethical social media use. Parents, educators, and community leaders must play an active role in guiding children toward responsible use of these platforms. A collective effort is required to strike a balance between the benefits of technology and the preservation of social values.

In conclusion, while social media offers numerous opportunities for the people of Kashmir, its negative consequences cannot be overlooked. It is crucial for the Kashmiri community to recognize the risks associated with excessive social media use and work towards a healthy balance that respects both technological advancements and cultural, spiritual, and social values. By doing so, Kashmir can harness the positive potential of social media while minimizing its adverse effects, ensuring that it becomes a force for good rather than oppression.
