Kupwara: As light of the prevailing snowfall and sub-freezing temperatures in the region, District Magistrate of Kupwara, issued an order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, to ensure safety on the district’s hilly roads.
The advisory, based on a traffic notification issued by the Sr. Superintendent of Police, Traffic Rural Kashmir, as per the news agency JKNS highlights the dangers posed by slippery roads in areas like Karnah, Keran, Machil, Jumagund, Kumkadi, and Budnambal.
It reads as, key directives are as, heavy vehicles and passenger buses are prohibited from traveling on these roads during inclement weather unless explicitly permitted. Light motor vehicles carrying passengers or essential goods must use anti-skid chains and secure prior permission to travel.
It also reads, vehicular movement on roads such as Kupwara-Karnah, Kupwara-Keran, and Kupwara-Machil is only permitted between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM during snowfall. Authorities, including BEACON, R&B, and PMGSY, are instructed to sprinkle salt on frozen road surfaces and clear snow promptly.
Notably, exemptions apply to magistrates, army personnel, police, CAPF, and government officials on duty. Any violation of the order is punishable under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023.—(JKNS)
