Srinagar: National Conference President and party chief, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, on Friday paid rich tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, renowned as the architect of India’s economic reforms, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92.

Referring to Singh as a “mentor and guide,” Dr. Farooq stated that Singh’s “deep understanding of economics inspired the nation” and that he led India with immense wisdom and integrity.

Addressing a selected group of reporters in Srinagar, Dr. Farooq, as per the news agency JKNS, highlighted that Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister, from 2004 to 2014, was marked by significant economic growth and the implementation of key reforms that liberalized India’s economy.

“Despite facing challenges, including corruption scandals during his second term, his personal integrity remained largely unquestioned. His contributions have left an indelible mark on India’s economic and political landscape,” Dr. Farooq said.

Dr. Farooq also emphasized that both current and future governments must follow in Manmohan Singh’s footsteps for continued success. He added that Singh had taken several initiatives for the welfare of Kashmiri Pandits and brought significant recognition to the renewable energy sector during his tenure.

It is worth mentioning that the Government of India (GoI) has declared a seven-day mourning period, with national flags flying at half-staff and cultural events canceled. Singh’s body has been placed in a glass casket draped with the Indian flag for public tributes, and his funeral is scheduled for Saturday.—(JKNS)
