Jammu: Member Legislative Assembly, Vikram Randhawa, accompanied by Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Dr. Devansh Yadav on Tuesday undertook an extensive tour of Gandhi Nagar, Jammu South to take stock of developmental activities and public amenities in the area.
The visit was aimed at reviewing the ongoing developmental projects being executed under the Jammu Smart City Limited project.
During the tour, the team inspected the progress of work on a major drainage system, being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.5 crore from Swarn Theatre to the Last More Gandhi Nagar Road. A vital component of the Locality Infrastructure Development, the project aims to address long-standing drainage issues in the area.
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to quality standards, the MLA and JMC Commissioner directed the executing agency to complete the drainage project within the set timeline. “The project should not face any delays and that all safety and engineering norms must be adhered to during its construction” they stressed.
Calling for removing encroachments along the nallahs including illegal residential and business establishments, they said that these pose potential risk to public safety and hinder the effective functioning of the drainage system. The MLA stressed the need to work out an effective solution to balance the development needs and the rights of the residents.
The Commissioner informed that certain steps are being taken to avoid future encroachments on or along nallahs. “Public utilities will be created in the area to make it more accessible and convenient for the general public, ensuring the space is used for community-friendly purposes,” he added.
Stressing the need for overall beautification and cleanliness of the Gandhi Nagar area, the Commissioner directed the concerned to relocate the food court currently situated at Gole Market to improve the ambiance of the market and reduce congestion in the area.
To stop the parking of two-wheelers at Apsara Road, the Commissioner said that space would be provided at Dussehra Ground, adding that the step would go a long way in minimizing congestion and snarl.
“Fines will be levied on defaulters who continue to park their vehicles in the designated area despite the directive,” he maintained.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner (South) Lal Chand, representatives from Revenue Department and other senior officers from Jammu Municipal Corporation accompanied the Commissioner during the tour.
