Jammu : Minister for Agriculture Production and Rural Development Department, Javid Ahmad Dar, on Monday emphasized government’s commitment towards empowering Self Help Groups (SHGs) through various initiatives.
Speaking as a chief guest at concluding ceremony of three day exhibition of art, craft and cuisines “Ashakari” by the skilled and empowered SHG members of Jammu & Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) at Kala Kendra Jammu, the Minister highlighted the support and incentives being provided by the department and government to these groups. He outlined the role of SHGs in empowering women and transforming rural economy in J&K .
Javid Dar expressed hope for achieving the targeted goals of economic and social upliftment. He emphasized on providing best market linkages to SHGs products for better economic prospects and business opportunities.
“Besides conducting exhibitions, seasonal SARAS melas, providing marketing platforms in districts via District Rural Haats and various other initiatives are being taken to enhance their business opportunities,” maintained the Minister.
He said that the sky is the limit for these skilful women who are successfully driving rural economy to new heights. He promised innovative measures to improve the functioning and outcomes of the institute, stating, “New ideas are being incorporated, and I believe that over time, the institute will yield significant benefits for the participants and the community at large.”
The Minister was accompanied by Secretary, Rural Development Department and Panchayati Raj (RDD&PR), Mohammad Aijaz Asad and Mission Director JKRLM, Dr Shubhra Sharma.
The event, organized by the JKRLM, celebrated the talent and craftsmanship of women Self-Help Group (SHG) members from across J&K . The exhibition featured 40 vibrant stalls showcasing the rich art and craft of J&K.
Javid Dar also visited the different stalls which offered a mix of handicrafts, handlooms and culinary delights representing both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions. He also witnessed distinctive live demonstrations of traditional art forms, including pottery, grass handicrafts, Basholi art and crewel embroidery, performed by the artisans of different women SHGs. He interacted with the artisans and praised them for their skilful crafting as testament to the region’s cultural legacy.
The exhibition brought together an electric mix of products that highlight the diverse cultural heritage and craftsmanship of J&K. Some of the featured items included Chabhri Binna from Reasi, Saffron from Pulwama, Black Zeera from Kishtwar, Essential oils and Natural Fragrance diffusers from Bhaderwah, Handicrafts and handlooms from Anantnag. Spices and pottery items from Samba, Picanut and Wheat Pine Baskets from Poonch, Jute bags and crochet items from Jammu, Willow baskets and handbags from Ganderbal, Hand-ground maize flour and pickles from Rajouri, Paper-Mache items from Bandipora, Basholi Pashmina shawls and Basholi paintings from Kathua and Crewel embroidery curtains and cushion covers from Kupwara and Budgam.
Among others the exhibition was attended by DG Rural Sanitation, Anoo Malhotra, Director Rural Development Department, Jammu, Mumtaz Ali, Director, Panchayati Raj, Sham Lal, Chief Operating Officer, Himayat, Rajneesh Gupta and others.
