October 27, 2024, Jammu & Kashmir: Today, a delegation of contractual teachers appointed in 2018 met with Dr. Sakeena Itoo, Minister of the Education Department, to discuss the long-standing issue of employment regularization. The meeting, held at the Minister’s office, was a significant step forward for these teachers, who have been eagerly awaiting job security and acknowledgment for their contributions to the education sector.

The delegation outlined their concerns, emphasizing the hardships faced by contractual teachers in terms of job stability, lack of benefits, and an uncertain future. They urged the Minister to consider a policy for regularization that would provide these educators with the security they need to fully commit to their roles and contribute meaningfully to the educational progress of the region.

In response, Dr. Itoo expressed a deep commitment to addressing these concerns. She assured the delegation that the government recognizes the crucial role contractual teachers play in filling educational gaps and maintaining quality instruction across Jammu & Kashmir. Dr. Itoo indicated that the Education Department is currently reviewing policy options that would better support these teachers, hinting at potential steps towards regularization.

The delegation was reportedly impressed with Dr. Itoo’s attentiveness and genuine commitment to improving their situation. “It was reassuring to see the Minister’s dedication and her desire to provide real support to contractual teachers,” a delegation spokesperson stated. “We are hopeful that her efforts will soon translate into meaningful policy changes.”

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with Dr. Itoo encouraging the delegation to continue their important work and assuring them of further communication as the department finalizes its plans. This meeting is expected to generate optimism among contractual teachers, who are looking forward to updates on potential reforms aimed at providing them with long-term job security.
